What Is Double Cleansing? And Why Indian Skin Loves It?
Share
Double cleansing, or we simply call it as double cleaning is a two-step process of cleaning the face.
First with an oil-based cleanser and then a water-based cleanser. In double cleansing, an oil cleanser helps to remove the oil-soluble impurities such as waterproof makeup, SPF, etc then followed by a water cleanser which washes away the water-soluble substances such as dirt and pollution from your skin.
An oil-based cleanser should be emulsified when water is added to it to give a perfect deep cleanse. Afterwards, the water-based cleanser is used to remove any left-out gunk from the face. A gentle cleanser is always a win-win after using an oil cleanser. These both effectively work together if used in the right way.
Dermatologists and skincare experts say that SPF, pollution, and makeup clog your pores majorly at night time if not cleaned properly. This leads to blocked pores which causes acne. The double cleansing method prevents pore-clogging and improves the effectiveness of your skincare routine.
Pro tip: Never use a wet wipe or towel to remove the oil cleanser from your face. It’s not recommended since it affects the skin barrier.
What products to use for double cleansing?
When we talk about double cleansing, products like cleansing balm, makeup removal balm, micellar water, etc. are used. We always recommend using the products in the form of wax (balm) and using your fingers to massage them all over your face. The cotton pads used for the application of micellar water are not great for the skin, especially sensitive skin. The fingers on your face do the magic which is incomparable.
For the best experience, use Papaya & Shea Butter Cleansing balm for oil cleansing to remove SPF, makeup, and pollution. On top of that, use Blueberry & AHA Gentle Cleanser for water-based cleansing to get glowing and bright skin.
How to do Double Cleansing?
Oil Cleansing:
• Make sure your face is dry when you start the double cleansing process.
• Scoop out the balm with fingers or with the help of spatula and melt it between your fingers.
• Spread it evenly on the whole face and start massaging gently. All the SPF / makeup will start melting within seconds.
• For SPF and light makeup, massage it for 30 seconds and for heavy makeup, massage it for 60 seconds.
Tip: For heavy lipsticks, massage the cleansing balm it on lips and use a little water at the end to emulsify it to completely remove it.
• After the SPF / makeup is melted, emulsify the balm with water which turns the cleansing balm into a milky texture, and finally rinse it off. After a final wash, your skin will feel extra smooth and the cleanest. Your pores will start breathing.
Water Cleansing:
• Post oil cleansing, use a gentle water-based cleanser to attain maximum satisfaction.
• Take 1-2 pumps of cleaner on your fingers and apply on your face and massage for 10-15 seconds. A little bit of foaming is fine for the cleansing.
• Rinse your face with water and lastly, wipe with a soft towel to proceed with your skincare routine.
Recommendation to Double Cleanse based on Skin Types
Double cleansing is suggested for all skin types except for very sensitive skin. The ingredients in the cleansing balm should be consulted with the dermatologists if suited for sensitive skin. For other skin types (Normal, dry, oily and combination), a patch test is necessary. Skincare is subjective and can/cannot suit multiple skin types.
For oily, combination and acne-prone skin, it helps to balance the excess oils on the skin without causing dryness and gives a refreshed feel.
For normal skin, it helps to deep clean, purify the pores and gives an ultimate solution to healthy & glowing skin.
Cleansing Balm or Micellar water?
When the consumers were not aware of the oil cleansing / double cleansing, everybody was going gaga over micellar water and rubbed lots and lots of cotton pads on their skin. Before that, we were using cleansing milk which is also applied with the help of cotton and is less effective. The Western world, a few years back, started using cleansing balms and they proved to be most effective.
When using micellar water, one should always, without any ifs and buts, wash their face properly to not leave any residue behind. For people with sensitive skin, cotton pad fibers are proven to be breaking the skin barrier.
On the other hand, while using cleansing balm, the application with the fingers is a game changer. Over the years, it’s said that massaging the face thoroughly every night before sleeping helps in blood circulation, better skin texture and toning of the facial muscles. Cleansing balm serves both the purposes: of cleaning your face’s grime and also uplifting the face naturally.
With all the skincare routine steps, one should always use fingers to massage the face in the right manner. This makes a lot of difference. Only applying the product to complete the routine cannot give the right results.
Is it necessary to use cleansing balm?
Any of the skincare products are not sold for necessity unless prescribed by dermatologists. We always recommend using cleansing balm on the days when you are using SPF, light to heavy makeup, and also in contact with pollution.
Due to Indian weather, it is also becoming an important step to start your skincare routine.
Your skin will thank you!
Benefits of using Cleansing Balm
The cleansing balm helps to deep clean the skin, and melts makeup, SPF, dirt, and pollution. Regular use smoothens the skin texture by providing deep nourishment. Double cleansing is a very important step in Korean skincare to achieve healthy & glowing skin. It also helps to absorb all the goodness of your other skincare products.
NAFE Safe cleansing balm?
Non-Toxic: The cleansing balm should be free of harsh sulphates, parabens or silicones and other harmful ingredients.
Alcohol-Free: The oil cleanser should not have any drying alcohols present in it.
Fragrance-Free: NAFE safe standards avoid fragrance due to its potential to irritate the skin. Sometimes, fragrance needs to be added to products to mask the smell of other active ingredients but should be added in very low concentrations i.e. < 0.5%
Essential Oil-Free: The cleansing balm should not have any essential oils. These also irritate sensitive skin.

Common mistakes while double cleansing
1. Not using enough oil cleanser – The amount of oil cleanser you take should comfortably cover your entire face. It’s not a serum so it’s okay to use more and that’s how it melts off the makeup / SPF entirely.
2. Applying oil cleanser on wet skin – Oil cleanser goes on dry skin and after massaging for at least a minute you wash it off to emulsify the cleanser.
3. Using water-based cleanser on dry skin – Water cleanser should be applied on wet skin. Applying it on dry skin makes it ineffective.
4. Using pure oil as an oil cleanser – Pure oils like castor oil are comedogenic. They will melt off the makeup but they don’t have emulsifiers so they will be very hard to wash off and ultimately can clog your pores
5. Using a harsh water cleanser – Use a gentle cleanser that helps in unclogging the pores and doesn’t leave your face dry or tight.
